GWISH Community & Youth Outreach
It is imperative to our mission to be involved in our community in order to encourage and nurture future scientists. Below you'll find our upcoming outreach efforts. If you have questions, want to get involved, have ideas for events, or want to partner up please contact our Vice President Linnea Wolniewicz
In November of 2023, 3 GWISH members travelled to Farrington High School in Honolulu to teach students about science, college, and coding in Python. The workshop kicked off with a discussion on the significance of pursuing higher education and a career in science. Following this discussion, the volunteers led the class through an interactive workshop that involved using Python to discover the Jupiter-like gas giant orbiting the star Kepler-6, and a brief lesson on how astronomers discover exoplanets. As all presenters were female scientists, our outreach not only aimed to inspire curiosity in science but also served as a platform to spread awareness about diversity and the vital contributions of women in STEM.
In Spring 2024, GWISH received a mini-CASA grant to fund high school visits on and off-island. GWISH members visited five different high schools (nine total science classes) and one high school campus tour at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH). Students were very engaged during the workshops and we received positive feedback from teachers and students for every visit we conducted. The UH campus tour was an especially well-received event by students, and fostered 14 young girls' interest in science with the many lab tours and networking done with female graduate students.
Another mini-CASA grant was awarded to GWISH to fund more outreach during the Fall of 2024. GWISH members will be visiting high schools on and off O'ahu, and inviting Maryknoll High School female students interested in science back to UH for a science lab and campus tour.
