GWISH Community & Youth Outreach
It is important to us to be involved in our community in order to encourage and nurture future scientists. Below you'll find a review of our past outreach efforts. If you have questions, ideas, want to get involved, or want to partner up please contact us at [email protected].
Since November of 2023, GWISH members have been traveling to high schools on Oʻahu and the Island of Hawaiʻi to teach students about science, college, and coding in Python.
Our workshops kick off with a discussion on the significance of pursuing higher education and a career in science. Following this discussion, volunteers lead students through an interactive workshop using Python to discover a Jupiter-like gas giant planet orbiting star Kepler-6, using real data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope. All volunteers are members of GWISH, and so our outreach aims not only to inspire curiosity in science but also to spread awareness about the vital contributions of women in STEM.
In the Spring and Fall 2024, GWISH received mini-CASA grants to fund high school visits on and off-island. Since then, GWISH volunteers have visited four different High Schools on Oʻahu, one High School on the Big Island, as well as hosted students from Maryknoll High Sschool for a campus and lab tour of UH Mānoa three times!
We look forward to expanding our outreach efforts to more islands and continuing our connections with public high schools on Oʻahu.

Graduate Women in Science Hawai'i is a Registered Independent Organization (RIO) at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. Although GWISH has members who are University of Hawai'i students, the organization is independent of the University and does not represent the views of the University. GWISH is responsible for its own contracts, acts, or omissions.
